The Anthropological Student Association invites you to stop by their table on February 21 in the Tinkham Veale University Center, between 11:00AM – 2:00PM. Majors and minors can stop by for free American Anthropological Association Merchandise!

Later, join us for a showing of Smoke Signals, a 1990’s movie about modern Native-Americans coming to terms with their identity. The movie is free admission and will be from 7-9PM in Thwing 224. Free pizza will be provided!

The Graduate Discourse in collaboration with student groups in the CWRU School of Medicine will be presenting the second lecture of a three-part lecture series on medical anthropology in practice. The lecture will be held on December 14th from 12:15 – 1:15PM featuring anthropology graduate student Catherine Osborn. The talk is titled “Virtue, Vice, and Contraband: Contraception from Historical and Contemporary Perspectives” and will be located in the School of Medicine, Robbins 430.

This September 10-12, the Cleveland Museum of Natural History (Denise Su, Curator of Paleobotany and Paleoecology) and Case Western Reserve University (Darin Croft, Associate Professor, Department of Anatomy; and Scott Simpson, Professor of Anatomy and Adjunct Professor of Anthropology) are organizing a symposium on “Latest Methods in Reconstructing Cenozoic Terrestrial Environments and Ecological Communities.” This event will include: a public keynote presentation by Dr. John Flynn of the American Museum of Natural History on September 10 and a research workshop by 16 invited presenters on September 11-12, which also includes a poster session.

Vanessa Hildebrand offers cross-cultural perspective on mothering at MOMS meeting Fri. May 22nd, 2015

Moms Offering Moms Support (MOMS) will host an information session with a cross-cultural cultural perspective on mothering, parenting and childcare with Vanessa Hildebrand, assistant professor of anthropology. The session, which was rescheduled from a canceled event in February, will be held Friday, May 22, from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Flora Stone Mather Center for Women in Tinkham Veale University Center, Suite 248. Professor Hildebrand will discuss her research and work with mothers in Indonesia. MOMS meetings are open to all pregnant women and mothers who are faculty, staff, students, retired former Case Western Reserve Unversity employees and Case Western Reserve alumnae.

“Framing for Change: A Cultural-Cognitive Approach to Communication”
About the Speaker: Nathaniel Kendall-Taylor is Vice President for Research at FrameWorks Institute. He is a medical anthropologist leading a multi-disciplinary team of social scientists in studying public understanding and exploring ways to reframe such pressing issues as criminal justice reform, immigration, taxation, early childhood development, addiction, environmental health, education, public health and climate change. He employs social science theory and research methods from anthropology to improve the ability of researchers, advocates and practitioners to improve social outcome.

His past research has focused on child and family health and in understanding the social and cultural factors that create health disparities and affect decision-making.
