The Department of Anthropology is excited to participate in the combined bachelor’s / master’s degree (CBM) program of the CWRU Graduate School. Below you will find general (and specific) information about the program, how you apply, and what to expect.

  • It should be noted, the CBM program was not designed for students to complete their master’s and bachelor’s within four years.
  • It is best to consider the CBM program your junior year (during your fifth / sixth semester of undergraduate enrollment).
  • Before contacting the Anthropology Graduate Program Director (Dr. Lee Hoffer) about the CBM, please check the following…
    • You must have 60-credit hours towards your bachelor’s degree completed before entering the CBM
  • Please be aware, to complete the CBM in one year (i.e., senior year), you may need to take classes at the 400 level before being accepted into the program (i.e., your Spring semester, junior year).
  • 400-level coursework is graduate coursework. Classes taken at the graduate level typically require substantially more reading, writing, time, and effort compared to 300 level courses.
  • For a Master’s degree, students must pass the Master’s degree qualifying exam, taken in Spring semester.
  • Finally, if you have an undergraduate scholarship, as a CBM student you maintain your status as an undergraduate student. However, should you graduate with your undergraduate degree before completing your master’s, graduate school tuition charges will apply.

  • To apply to the CBM program, you must first fill out a Planned Program of Study (PPOS) form (link).
  • On the PPOS, you must document all the courses you plan to take to fulfill your Master’s degree requirements (do not include your undergraduate degree requirements)
  • The Anthropology Graduate Program Director will assist you filling out the PPOS.
  • You (the student) will submit the PPOS to the CWRU Graduate School for approval. For the PPOS:
    • All CBM classes must be taken at the 400 level
    • For your Master’s degree, you must complete a total of 30-credit hours.
    • Only ANTH course count toward this 30-hour requirement.
  • To assist you to plan your CBM and fill out your PPOS…
    • Below are the required classes for the CBM in anthropology. When completing your PPOS these courses (ANTH 480, 439, 481, 462, and statistics*) must be listed.
    • *If you have already taken a statistics class that meets the requirement of the department (300 level, or above), you must substitute another class for statistics.
    • It may be difficult to anticipate the electives to list on the PPOS as year-to-year course offerings can be difficult to predict. Please consult the Anthropology Department listing of courses and/or review what has been offered in previous years.
    • Finally, you may count 3 classes total, 9 credit hours, that you have already taken toward your 30-credit hour Master’s degree requirement. Please indicate these courses on the PPOS.
